The Fighter Kite

These kites caught me totally by surprise! When I first saw them flying at the kite festival, I told my wife I couldn't get interested in them. But these "simple" kites give so much for so little! Fighter kite flyers talk about the "grin". It's from that almost giddy joy one feels from being totally involved with the kite, a kite that is so much simpler than most yet provides such great flying pleasure and challenge. Add to that the immense fun of building and designing your own and participating in the fighter kite community and you begin to appreciate these wonderful kites.

My Roo Fighter
06/10/03 I was interested in exploring rip stop polyester fighters and asked around for good one. A fellow fighter flyer highly recommended the Roo Fighter by Joseph Ludwig so I emailed Joe and got one. It is a high quality kite and what a great flyer!!! He inspired me to build my own polyester fighters. One of my favorite kites.

My Intro to FK
At the kite building competition at MIKE in 2003, someone recommended I talk with Andy Selzer about quality kite building. As I approached him he was flying a fighter kite. Upon finding out that I had never flown one he handed me the line. I enjoyed flying it but still didn't quite get fighter kites.

A short time later at WIKF, Andy introduced my son in law, Brian Bowser to fighter kite flying. Watching him fly and listening to flyers give instruction, it finally clicked. Then a voice said "Someone should give these guys a kite!" It was Paul Peters as he reached into his field box and gave us each a beautiful kite he had made.

Paul Peters

Paul has patiently answered so many questions and provided resources to get me started building.
Both Andy and Paul have been a challenge to me to get others involved in fighter kites.
